Why is that important? If you sell your jerky to retailers, nothing kills your hard work of getting display space any faster than running out of a flavor. Retailers hate empty spots and it is an open invitation for a competitor to take it.
If you sell your jerky at events, deposits are required in advance, so if you suddenly do not have enough product you could lose hard-earned dollars by losing your event deposits. Don’t lose customers to a competitor because your website is out of their favorite flavor.
What are typical lead times for private label from private label manufacturers? One of the leading private label manufacturers has experienced a lead time of up to eight weeks since the Covid Pandemic started in March, 2020 and that lead time has fluctuated many times and you can’t plan and manage your cash flow this way.

Why is smaller run private label jerky important? Unless you have an unending supply of money, protecting cash flow is vitally important and the companies who do have millions of dollars of operating capitol know the secret of protecting it. Most of our private label customers order every Monday. That protects cash flow and it keeps inventory fresher… and even though jerky has a year long shelf life… the fresher it is, the more you will sell and the more profit you will make. Typical private label companies require 360-1000 pounds of each flavor as a minimum order in every production; that does not serve the small start up business that doesn’t have any customers yet.

TIME TABLE for Starting with Jeff’s Famous Private Label Jerky Program
We focus on a maximum of new five private label requests at a time to assure the utmost attention to detail is put in place to make sure your branded private label efforts will yield the best of success for your company. Each step can move quickly and you can have private label jerky available to sell in your brand in as little as a few weeks. Private label snack items are even faster.
STEPS to Getting Your Private Label Jerky Started
- Order Jerky flavors listed above from our website. Contact us for other snack samples, but since we get hundreds of requests a month, we do charge for samples. Too many requests to do it any other way, and potential businesses who are really interested generally understand that an investment is required for every great new business opportunity.
- Contact us HERE with your request for samples or to talk or just get started.
- Provide this information for your label; a high resolution copy of your logo, the name of your company as it should appear on the label, the company city, state and zip code, plus your website address. If you want your phone number on the label… provide the area code and phone number but keep in mind if that phone numbers change, but websites rarely do.
- Talk to us about your business and decide on the flavors you want to start offering first.
- Graphic Design of your labels generally start as soon as you provide the needed information and are ready for your final approval in about a week or less.
- Final label designs are all submitted for USDA compliance. Approval or changes required usually take less than a week, unless a full submission to the USDA becomes necessary.
- Labels submitted for printing, the same or next business day.
- You first production order ships to you quickly after your order is received. USA shipping generally takes 1-5 business days; pallets may require longer shipping time and require about a two week lead time.
- We do not offer terms for any accounts. Need 30 Day Terms? Use a credit card for payment and create your own 30 day terms, while building your credit at the same time. Need 60 Day Terms? Apply for an American Express Plum Card, 60 day terms for businesses.
Got Your Own Recipe or Do You Need Special Jerky Recipe Formulation?
UPDATE: 5/16/23 – We are NO LONGER accepting special recipe requests. The process is so long with so many steps to follow up, it requires too much of our time. Most USDA plants are also not accepting special recipe requests for the same reasons. We are leaving the information below, just for you to use as a guideline if you find a plant to help you. If talking to Jeff can help you in the process, just reach out.
Jeff is the master and he will personally help you. 250 lb. production minimum per special recipe flavor each time you order. Depending upon the flavor, that can yield on average 600-850 bags (2.5 oz. beef jerky), so you will have to hit the ground running.
- Bringing Your Own Recipe to Commercial Jerky Production is a Process that can take 3-6 months depending mostly on how busy the USDA because they have to review your label or packaging and even your recipe.
- The average cost per flavor has these estimated expenses and steps; Samples: $100, Nutrition Facts $200/Flavor, Graphic Design of Labels about $250 (depending upon how many flavors), Submission to USDA and the efforts toward getting USDA final approval of recipe and label, $250/flavor. Extra fees may apply if your recipe needs modifications or consulting help and finally an opening minimum order of about 1000 bags/flavor. Deep pockets are needed and this all takes time; generally 3-4 months, start to finish. It is much easier, and it is a much smaller investment to Private Label our own approved jerky flavors.
- A new recipe formulation by Jeff will cost even more just because he is so in demand and so, so busy. If you have found a USDA facility that will make jerky for you, Jeff still might be available to create a recipe formulation for you.
NOTE: We get a LOT of requests for Private Label Jerky and we only work on five new private label jerky accounts at a time, so if you are serious, don’t wait and when we contact you, be sure to communicate back in a timely manner; we want to make sure you get really focused attention, and if you are serious, we just have to keep all the steps moving in consideration of the next private label customer who is waiting.
